LOCATION
The protected area is located in the western south zone of the country, specifically between the municipalities of Opatoro, Guajiquiro, Santa Ana, Santa Maria, San Pedro de Tutule and Marcala, all in the Department of La Paz. In order to arrive the highway is taken Tegucigalpa-San Pedro Sula, to approximately 60 min of trip takes the deflection to La Paz and Marcala and travels around 75min until Marcala (150 kms hard road) After Marcala to Opatoro 45 min (25 km wagon without paving) After Marcala to Guajiquiro 90 min (50 km wagon without paving)
DESCRIPTION
The area is constituted by a cloudy forest characterized by a plateau whose tips of maximum elevations oscillate between 2.253 and 2.264 m.s.n.m., in which prevail pine forests, latifoliado and mixed, in secondary state and like surpluses of the primary forest. In their majority, these are reflected in small mass fragmented in its form of wooded or round islands, among them ayacahuite (pinus ayacahuite), species that like the deer white tail (odocoileus virginianus) is in extinction danger. Additionally, they can be appraised a significant variety of other species of flora. It stands out of equal way, the cloudy forest and the fact of being one of 2 areas of the country where you are 5 of the 7 reported species of pine for Honduras.
POPULATION ETHNIC GROUP LENCA
As characteristic excellent they emphasize, the presence of one of the more representative ethnic groups of our identity: The Lencas, that by more than 400 years has remained in the zone. This ethnic group was very numerous in the days of the Spanish conquest. At the moment and although many customs are had lost and traditions are left, some own cultural practices still alive. Some stories and linguists particularities, make think that still in 1925, they existed old people that conserved their Lenca language. Still and when the churches have still penetrated not they leave the celebrations and agrarian rites in gratefulness to the mother earth.
LEGAL SITUATION
The National Congress declared Biological Reserve in 1987, by means of Decree 87-87. In 1995, INADES and COHDEFOR, subscribed an Agreement of Protection and Handling of the Reserve.
ATTRACTIVE SCENIC BEAUTY
In the summer and to the 2.100 m.s.n.m., can be enjoyed the majesty that offers the Vista of the Gulf of Fonseca in the Pacific, the splendor of an imposing view in which some of their islands are contemplated. Additionally it is possible to be contemplated to the fabulous dawns or dusks. In the winter, he is propitious to enjoy interminable fogs and the immensely pure air that the mountain offers. The zone presents a rainy climate, particularly between the months of May and October (rainiest July and October); of November to January is characterized by persistent drizzles. THAT IT MAKES INADES IN THE RESERVE?
All the activities that are made are directed towards the handling of the area and the development of the communities of an ecologically viable form, that allows to the present and coming generations a healthy future.
